How Did Angel Fire Get Its Name?

Centuries ago the nomadic Ute and J tribes would pilgrimage to Angel Fire for spiritual rituals. Here, they noticed that when the sun rose and set over the Sangre de Cristo mountains that the peaks would appear as if in an orange and red inferno. One of the elders declared this to be ‘the breath of the spirits’. Franciscan monks later translated this to, ‘breath of angels’ which the New Mexican pioneer, Kit Carson, shortened to ‘Angel Fire’.

Angel Fire is in Northern, New Mexico. It is part of the famed enchanted circle which surrounds part of the Sangre de Cristo mountains with views of Wheeler Peak. What Airports Are Near Angel Fire?

The nearest airport is 30 miles in Taos. This airport hosts routes from Texas (Austin and Dallas) and California (Burbank and San Diego), seasonally. The Santa Fe airport is 100 miles from Angel Fire, but don’t worry, it’s a very scenic drive. The airport only has one terminal, making it extremely easy to navigate. Several airlines fly in and out of Santa Fe Regional airport each day.

Albuquerque is the biggest airport in this region. Recently remodeled, it provides a welcoming venue as well as showcases the uniqueness of northern New Mexico. Most major airlines fly in and out of Albuquerque International Airport.
