Habla Tamale will no longer be a tamale cook-off. We found out late last week, from the state, food handling laws have changed as of July 1, 2021.
For a festival or cook-off, food must be prepared on site, to be sold for consumption. Tamales cannot be pre-cooked at home and then transported to another location to sell. Nor can they be cooked in a commercial kitchen and transported to another location to sell. To get a permit, the tamales must be cooked and sold from the same location. Tamales are an item that cannot be cooked on-site in a couple of hours, therefore the tamale cook-off, tamale eating contest and judging has been canceled.
